Wheat State Hobbies got it start in the summer of 2012 following the unexpected death of the existing hobby shop owner. When his widow announced that she was not going to keep the store open, several of us in the Derby Radio Control Club got together and decided that we wanted/needed to keep a hobby store in Derby. It was at this meeting that I announced my desire to one day own/run a hobby store, but admitted that we were not in a position financially for me to quite my job and run the store. It was at this point my darling wife said "I can run it during the day". That was the start of what is now Wheat State Hobbies.
Over the next few weeks we pulled together capital, located a store front that we could afford and decided upon a name. Some of the names we discussed was "Escape Hobbies", "The Library" and a few others. As you have already guessed we decided on Wheat State Hobbies. We were told that we "could not" find a place for less than $1,000 a month, we did. We were told there was no way you could start and stock a store for less than $100k, we did by a lot less! We opened our doors for business in September of 2012.
Fast forward to 2016, we are in the process of moving into a new location that will double our space!
..............more to come..........
